Before You Start

A fraction shows part of a whole. The parts must be equal. If the parts are not the same size, the picture is not a fair fraction.

  • Use paper, coins, blocks, or drawings.
  • Say the fraction words out loud: half, fourth, one half, one fourth.
  • Ask: Are the parts equal?
  • Go slowly. Fractions take practice.

🫧 Bubbles Says

Fractions are easier when you draw the whole first. Then split it into equal parts.

Worksheet A: Equal Parts

Draw the whole. Split it into equal parts. Then shade the part named.

1. One Half

Draw one rectangle.

Split it into 2 equal parts.

Shade 1 part.

Fraction: 1/2

2. One Fourth

Draw one square.

Split it into 4 equal parts.

Shade 1 part.

Fraction: 1/4

3. Three Fourths

Draw one circle or rectangle.

Split it into 4 equal parts.

Shade 3 parts.

Fraction: 3/4

Worksheet B: Circle the Correct Fraction

Read each sentence. Circle the fraction that matches.

Problem 1

A pizza is cut into 2 equal pieces. You eat 1 piece.

Circle one: 1/2 or 1/4

Problem 2

A paper is cut into 4 equal pieces. You color 1 piece.

Circle one: 1/2 or 1/4

Problem 3

A candy bar has 4 equal pieces. You eat 3 pieces.

Circle one: 3/4 or 1/4

Worksheet C: Explain Your Thinking

Writing one sentence helps the learner understand the math.

Question 1

How do you know a shape is split into equal parts?

Answer: ________________________________

Question 2

Which is larger: 1/2 or 1/4?

Draw a picture to show your answer.

Question 3

Why does 3/4 mean more than 1/4?

Answer: ________________________________

Helper Answer Key

Use this key for checking, not rushing. Let the learner explain their drawing before giving the answer.

  • Problem 1: 1/2
  • Problem 2: 1/4
  • Problem 3: 3/4
  • 1/2 is larger than 1/4 when both wholes are the same size.
  • 3/4 is more than 1/4 because three equal parts are shaded instead of one.
